Teacher Guide: Otto of the Silver Hand by Howard Pyle

Robber baron Conrad is injured when he attacks rival baron Frederick. Conrad’s wife Matilda dies after seeing his wounds, but not before giving birth to Otto. Baron Conrad takes Otto to a nearby monastery, returning when Otto is twelve. Later, Baron Henry, Frederick’s nephew, kidnaps Otto, who builds a friendship with Frederick’s eight-year-old daughter Pauline. Conrad and his men rescue Otto, but Conrad dies in the attempt. Otto grows into manhood, loving peace instead of war.
